International Studies & World Languages

We currently offer classes in Spanish, French, and German. In all cases, we draw on the Maine State Learning Results standards for World Languages in order to emphasize the development of linguistic skills and cultural competence. We focus on communication: learning to understand and use the language in meaningful and authentic ways. Students learn to express themselves, to ask questions, and communicate with others in the target language, orally and in writing. They develop listening and reading comprehension skills by engaging with live and recorded oral materials and written text. As they study languages, they also learn about the people who speak the language and the places and cultures in which the languages are spoken. Throughout the World Language/International Studies program, we strive to inculcate an international perspective that will help to broaden students’ worldview and prepare them for a large, complex, and intercultural world.
