Science

Science at Blue Hill Harbor School is multifaceted and diverse. Students leave BHHS with an understanding of the world around them and knowledge in fields of interest to them. We offer traditional science courses, as well as supplemental, short-term and directed-study courses.

Students are offered a grounding in the basic sciences through Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science courses. These are supplemented with courses such as Geology, Environmental Science, Mycology, Botany & Herbal Studies, Marine Science, and Current Issues in Science & Technology. Students learn everything from the properties and composition matter, the properties and usage of energy, to the interactions between elements; from the structures and functions of cells, the growth and development of organisms, genetics and reproduction, as well as the interactions between organisms in an ecosystem. Students learn the various ways in which the systems of the world connect and interact, from the water cycle to global climate change to cellular respiration. Problem solving, modeling, and scientific knowledge delivery skills are also covered. Students are encouraged to study any areas of the sciences that are of interest to them, which fosters further interest in science and the skill for lifelong science learning.
