DR. JOSHUA L. JONES, PH.D, our Teaching Principal and Character and Creativity Advisor, has been honored to serve the Blue Hill Harbor School for the past five years. He has a background in counseling, philosophy, ethics, youth leadership, and adventure-based education, as well as more hands-on endeavors such as aircraft maintenance and tree work. For Joshua, education should be true to its original meanings--to train, and to set free. Training young people to be truly free through accountability, high expectations, and a supportive community is the focus of all his work at the Blue Hill Harbor School. Even though every day presents new challenges, he insists "it's fun! Really, it is!"
MR. ANDREW DILLON is our Lead Advisor, Science Advisor, and Math Advisor. In addition, Andrew efficiently manages most day-to-day operations. It’s his eighth year working at the Blue Hill Harbor School, and he has distinguished himself for his personal attention, unconditional support, extraordinary technical skills, love of mathematics, and true kindness towards students and staff alike. Andrew graduated from Bennington College in 1985 with a BA in Music, and subsequently taught as part of the faculty there. He also has an M.S. in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
MS. BRITTANY COURTOT is our Social Studies/ U.S. History Advisor. She is a 2012 alumni of the Blue Hill Harbor School; and in 2016 Brittany earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Maine at Farmington. She has broad experience with History Education, from a docent internship at the Eisenhower National Historic Site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to working locally at the Jonathan Fisher House and the Blue Hill Historic Society. The 2016 - 2017 school year is Brittany's second teaching year as an Advisor at the Blue Hill Harbor School.
MS. LEE LEHTO is our English Advisor holds a master’s degree in Teaching Secondary English, and is nearing completion of a second master’s degree in Writing and the Teaching of Writing, both from the University of Maine at Orono. For ten years Lee taught English at Deer Isle Stonington High School, and for three years at George Stevens Academy. She is an avid reader and sometime poet, who "believes in the value of writing as a means of making thought visible, and communicating with others across time and cultures." Lee has lived in East Blue Hill since 1975.
Our Subject Advisors
MS. HEATHER LYON is our Art Advisor. Heather is a professional visual artist born in Ellsworth, Maine, and holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has studied at Oxbow, RISD, The Burren College of Art, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. After living and working in France for four years, she returned to Maine in 2009, and built an ecological home with her husband and son. Heather has been the Art Advisor at the Blue Hill Harbor School since 2015, and believes that "art is a way to create meaning" and that art is "particularly crucial for adolescents in their journey towards self discovery."
MR. NATHAN RUTENBECK is our Math Advisor. He joined us in the 2016-2017 school year, after many years of farming, carpentry and advanced scholarship. Nathan is our math mastermind and information science professional. He also brings to the School his rich background in forestry, divinity training, and philosophy.
MR. GREG HOLMAN, our Spanish Advisor, is a magna cum laude graduate of Bowdoin College. Greg spent 16 years in Mexico, teaching English to executives and students. Now north of the border, he enjoys teaching Spanish and Mexican culture to students in Blue Hill—at the K-8 Blue Hill Consolidated School and at at the Blue Hill Harbor School. Greg also enjoys theatre, and was an actor/singer in two summer musicals with the New Surry Theatre Blue Hill.
MS. ELENA BOURAKOVSKY, our Career and Education Advisor, is an excellent communicator with a wealth of experience in career and education guidance, and easily establishes rapport and trust with our students. Using theatre techniques and computer technology to teach life skills, she helps our young adults to succeed in achieving their goals. Elena is a Certified Global Career Development Facilitator, earned a joint Bachelor/ Master of Science in Library Arts from St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, in St. Petersburg, Russia and completed a Certificate in Advanced Theatre Production from the Moscow Bolshoi Theatre. Here in Blue Hill, she designs costumes for the New Surry Theatre, and manages her own farm and business.
MS. ANGEL NELLIGAN-SMITH, is our Health and Physical Education Advisor. Angel grew up in Maine, where she experienced many different types of sports, outdoor recreation, and fitness activities. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maine, and, during her studies there, Angel competed as a pole vaulter on Division 1 track. Along with her position at the Blue Hill Harbor School, she teaches physical education and health at the Veazie Community School and Airline Community School, and coaches track and field at John Bapst High School in Bangor.
Angel has always been passionate about health and fitness and strives to share that with her students. "My goal as an educator is to set a foundation for lifelong fitness awareness, to encourage my students to consider fitness holistically, and, by engaging them in a diverse variety of activities our wonderful state of Maine has to offer, help them discover activities that they enjoy, so they can maintain a life-long healthy lifestyle."
